According to the American Art Therapy Association,

“Art therapy is an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.

Art therapy, facilitated by a professional art therapist, effectively supports personal and relational treatment goals as well as community concerns. Art therapy is used to improve cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress, and advance societal and ecological change.”

It’s a well known fact that over the last few years, the handmade market has exploded.  After the start of Etsy, a trend began and others tried to follow along such as ArtFire and Handmade on Amazon. Many of the people that originally started shops on Etsy were woman; woman that were staying home with their children or people that that found themselves home with chronic illnesses. What started out as hobbies turned into businesses. What was once a tiny niche of an industry became a significant player, as the appetite for high-quality products (made by an actual human being) keeps growing.⁣

The world has been turned upside down with COVID19 and the 3 biggest consumer trends impacting our lives right now are working from home, homeschooling, and home fitness.  The handmade world has been called on as face covers, masks and other supplies have been in short supply all over the country. Speaking of which, we are still making cloth face masks! Several styles and options are available. They’re $8 each & we ship 1st class PLUS shipping is free (to the US) Turnaround time is about a week for most orders. If you’re a healthcare admin seeking large order fulfillment or know someone who is, we can meet your needs. We have a mask-making army that can make the large quantities you may need within a reasonable time frame. We have over a dozen sewists making masks right now and we are working around the clock to fulfill orders.  (and we can bring on more freelance sewists if your order is very big).  Our handmade cloth masks are individually handcrafted, thus the quality is far superior than any cloth masks that are mass-produced. Love, care and good vibes go into each and every one.

More than ever, people are turning back the clocks to a time when being safe at home was a good thing, not to mention a normal thing. People are having conversations more, playing games, doing some much needed pampering and self care that many just don’t have time for anymore. For example, I had forgotten that I used to paint my own nails in the past. I didn’t always go to the nail salon and have them done. I can grow and paint my own nails but I haven’t in years until now. Lots of people are using this time to learn a new skill or language. How do you learn a new skill? Everyone is different is seems. I am big on reading. If I want to learn how to do something new, I head to the library. My sons on the other hand would go straight to YouTube to watch it. My husband would just do it and learn as he went.

Many people are catching up on projects around the house too, but may be starting to run out. If you are one of those people and want to learn something new take a look at our shop, Small Shop School. They have PDF Ebooks and tutorials that are available for instant download and are available worldwide to keep you busy learning something new and fun like the one for this beautiful baby crown. There is even some Ebooks in there that have the small business owner in mind! Pink Rose Venetian Lace Crown Flower Girl Tutorial

If you haven’t heard the news, there is a major life-saving operation happening out there among sewists across the nation. People who sew have been creating face masks, scrub caps, gowns and other PPE gear for our nation’s healthcare workers. They’ve been deemed the unsung heroes out there on the “front lines” of the war against the nasty and deadly corona virus pandemic. Sewists all across the United states are delving into their fabric stashes, downloading patterns sanctioned by the Center’s for Disease Control, rolling up their sleeves and getting to work! We all know SOMEONE in the healthcare field, we all have a friend, neighbor or loved ones in the trenches… whether it has arrived in your local community or not, it’s time to get them protected. Our most vulnerable , the elderly, sick or those with underlying chronic health conditions are at risk. The CDC is now changing their tune and saying that since the Covid-19 virus is so very contagious, it probably IS a good idea for those that must go out to be wearing masks afterall. We’re all learning as we go, facts are emerging and we’re adapting on the fly~ a virus like this has never before been seen in our lifetime~ so we’re all just doing our best as we go. We all need each other more than ever before.  In addition to good hygiene and social distancing, masks are much needed.

The makers of GS Handmade have been making masks for personal use, and will be offered in their shops, in addition to many are making and donating them, as well as fulfilling orders for large healthcare facilities that have budgets for PPE for their workers. GS Handmade is working with a chain of nursing homes/long-term care facilities in the state of Illinois where the need is great, and timing is imperative.

As the leader/founder of GS this makes me so proud, and so happy to be able to provide these products for this time of need. We are doing all we can, we’re working hard, and it’s full steam ahead. What an amazing thing to be able to use your time & talents to be able to protect people and save lives! May they all be richly blessed for all they’re doing for this cause! It makes me so proud, this is what handmade is all about. I always say

“Handmade is the New American Manufacturing”

and this couldn’t be more true at the moment. Keep up the good work, I know we are not the only ones doing this, and want to commend and recognize ALL the sewists out there putting our country’s healthcare workers’ well-being at the forefront. Your efforts ARE appreciated and needed and they’re working to flatten the curve.  May everything positive like this that you put out into the world come back to you ten fold.

Mobilizing the troops: How the makers are saving the world, one make at a time

Forbes , the magazine read by millions of business minded individuals put out this call for makers:

“Calling All People Who Sew And Make: You Can Help Make Masks For 2020 Healthcare Worker PPE Shortage”

The current corona virus crisis has caused the working world to realize that we are an untapped resource involved in the supply chain. I’ve said for years that handmade is the new American manufacturing. So many jobs and manufacturing facilities have gone overseas that we barely make anything in this country any more. We’ve become so dependent on other countries to produce things for us ~ and it’s mainly China. When a pandemic breaks out in China, that’s gonna jack up the supply chain fo’ sho! This crisis has made millions realize how much we depend on other countries for our goods.

There is a desperate crisis for healthcare workers ~ they’re running out (many have already run out and are reusing masks, or going without) of their personal protective equipment like masks and face shields.

This from Forbes: “If you want to rally the world to your cause, think like a little bird and tweet. Hospitals and doctors are reaching out via social media to ask for mission-critical help in solving the shortage of N95-type masks during the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. “

When Australia had the horrible wildfires, we saw the maker community come together like nobody had ever seen before.. they made bat wraps, and kangaroo pockets, and nests by the thousands and had them shipped down under. Now it’s our turn to take care of our own, and makers are stepping up like nobody has ever seen before.

Our healthcare system is about to be completely swamped, and overwhelmed by the massive influx of sick people.

We have begun moblilizing the makers, they’re making cdc sanctioned masks….

Here’s a pattern that the CDC endorses:  How to make a face mask (pdf downloadable/printable) / Full pattern here

The ladies of GS Handmade have been busy, busy, busy!

This is just one of the makers working for the “war effort” against the corona virus! We are sending these to a contact of mine in New York (The Scientific Seamstress, Carla Crimm) and then she will distribute. These are masks that just one lady is making! We know the need there is greatest, as it’s the “epicenter” of the virus cases right now~ after these, we will begin to focus on other places…many are also making and donating them locally. This is a significant movement~perhaps even a revolution of epic noble intentions, is underway in hackerspaces, makerspaces, and sewing groups to come together and solve a problem to save lives at risk with the Coronavirus.  We got this!

If you’re out of elastic (and there has been a shortage it seems) I saw a workaround/hack using a tshirt on facebook that a friend posted:

A friend posted this today. Thought I’d share for those running out of elastic

Here’s what I’m doing to make mask ties instead of all the cutting/pressing/stitching for bias strips:

Cut the bottom hem off a t-shirt, then cut strips about ¾” to 1” wide (I just eyeball mine). Pull hard on the strips to get the stretch out, and you’re left with knit “cording” that won’t fray, requires no pressing/stitching, and sews/ties brilliantly. I get about 40yds from a single XL t-shirt.

Here’s another idea on how those of you with a 3-d printer can help our heroes on the front lines:

Calling All Makers With 3D Printers: Join Critical Mission To Make Face Masks And Shields For 2020 Healthcare Workers

From Forbes:

“After seeing the N95 shortage gripping the nation’s healthcare workers, HP Inc. and partners have mobilized to create 3D printed face mask and face shield solutions, plus a few other innovative ideas, to keep people safe during the COVID-19 outbreak.

There is a rallying cry, a peaceful, but intense call to arms, if you will. People all over the world are seeing that many of our biggest players are struggling or faltering and they are stepping in to fill the breach. This is not insignificant, but also this is not unprecedented in the 3D printing world. This is actually the norm for makers and hackers (the good kind); they are helpful and immensely generous, especially in the face of true need. I have written about this industry and its players for many years and I am always moved to tears of joy by the people and organizations who stand up for others and deliver to help solve a problem that 3D printing is uniquely able to solve. I want to tell you about a few of them during the challenging times we face in the Coronavirus.

HP Inc. and Partners Mobilize 3D Printing Solutions to Battle COVID-19 have more than 1,000 3D printed parts already delivered to local hospitals close to their 3D R&D centers in Barcelona, Spain; Corvallis, Oregon; San Diego, California; and Vancouver, Washington. They have made their and other company’s 3D Covid-19 models free to download here.

I forgot to mention Materialise as one of HP’s partners and they created a number of free to download files for COVID-19 prevention, including the Hands-Free 3D-Printed Door Opener found on the HP site above, plus a Shopping Cart Handle.

This ongoing GoFundMe: Save Lives w 3D Printed Face Shields is impressive and inspiring — this is a team of high school students in the Charlotte Latin School covering K-12 with a FabLab. Read their mission and overview and tell me you are not blown away by the effort these young people are making (led by two MD parents with children at the school).

In support of the #MillionMaskChallenge on Twitter, the engineering team at Charlotte Latin intend to 3D print face shields that will be provided to local hospitals in Charlotte, starting with the Levine Cancer Institute. The goal? To manufacture 10,000 face shields. Bravo.

From Forbes

MatterHackers, the largest distributor of desktop digital manufacturing equipment and materials in the USA, is arguably one of the dominant 3D printing voices in social media and they often rally behind various community initiatives. I am not surprised to see them drop everything and hit this virus with everything they can. Dave Gaylord, Chief Technical Officer, comes from a Medical Device R&D and manufacturing background and is passionately ensuring MatterHackers connects those in need with those who can make.

The MatterHackers initiative is called the COVID-19 Additive Manufacturing Community Response Hub and it will “connect those in the U.S. who need medical aid (Hospitals and Govt. Agencies) and those who can create it using Digital Manufacturing, for which MatterHackers has a broad base of customers to engage with.” It has been live for three days and hundreds have signed up.

Formlabs has an impressive medical capability with its 3D printers (before COVID-19) and opened up its networks and printers to help with a tiny item of critical concern to the medical community: COVID-19 Test Kit Swabs (Check out the detailed photo below). The site lists out several designs. Their PR rep messaged me to say:

“Formlabs is mobilizing its community of users to deploy nearly 1,000 printers to quickly mass-produce these swabs as well as other important personal protective equipment (PPE). A single print can produce 300 test swabs at a time enabling Formlabs to produce 75,000-150,000 swabs per day. This development will rapidly provide hospitals with access to large quantities of these essential COVID-19 test kit components.”

You can help. Today, right now. Are you sitting in your apartment or house in some sort of state-wide lockdown? You can do something to help others. People of all ages and walks of life are diving in to make a difference. Check out some of these amazing initiatives, both small and large:

Joost De Cock (Old Dutch for “The Cook”) started the FreeSewing Open Source Project from his home in the Netherlands to provide free sewing patterns. Recently, his wife who is a surgeon started seeing potential shortages in personal protective equipment (PPE). Joost knew what to do, so he posted it to FreeSewing in late February. People thought he was being silly as a handmade mask would never be used by professionals. (I love the brand for FreeSewing.org, by the way.)

But he was onto something when he posted: Calling all makers: Here’s a 1-page PDF facemask pattern; Now go make some and help beat this thing. I took inspiration from Joost’s call for help in the writing of my headline. Shoutout also to Katelyn Bowden who shared Joost’s post. It is her workshop photo above and she has been cranking out the DIY masks. She calls herself a “reluctant hacker” and also runs a nonprofit to help image abuse victims. She pointed me to a bunch of different resources.

If you think that a handmade mask cannot be used, think again. Even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a place for them — in times of crisis, like the one we are in right now. On the CDC page: Strategies for Optimizing the Supply of Facemasks, they explain that as a last resort, a homemade mask is acceptable. Frankly, we are at that stage right now. Here’s how they explain it in the Crisis Strategy section, When No Facemasks Are Available, Options Include:

“Healthcare personnel (HCP) use of homemade masks:

In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.

It is possible that the government and manufacturers will ramp up in a wartime-like effort, but the reinforcement is more likely to come from the people. Millions of masks are needed. People are starting to make them and it is going to be a big deal.

Clearly, there is a shortage of the manufactured N95 respirator. You know this. Healthcare workers know this. If you have been hoarding them, let me cut to the chase — there are people and organizations who need your extras and you can do the right thing and donate them. Get in touch with Holly Figueroa O’Reilly on Twitter — she is organizing the distribution of masks. Karen Booth is another person listing out different projects as she starts making masks herself. Follow the hashtags #millionmaskchallenge and #millionmaskmayday and scroll through and you will find programs and projects around the USA and world.

People like Joost, Katelyn, Holly, and Karen are bringing enormous good into the world. When I asked Joost why he was doing this FreeSewing project, he pointed me to his Pledge page where he explains that all the funds that come into the project are donated to Doctors Without Borders. All of it. Why? He pointed me to that page again: “I don’t know if you’re familiar with the phrase ‘noblesse oblige’ but it essentially means that privilege entails responsibility.” Then said, “I mean every word of it.”

Makers, hackers, craftspeople are awesome.

Spring Break Is On A Whole New Level

Michelle Waters from Scrapper’s Snips and Stitches, shared this photo of a pear tree in her front yard today. Isn’t it gorgeous? It is obvious that spring is definitely making its way in and it seems pretty early this year after a kind of strange winter. It makes me wonder if summer is going to roll in early also, and be long and hot? In 2020, the spring equinox falls on Thursday, March 19, which is earlier than it has been in over a century. It is usually the 20th or the 21st. This marks the astronomical first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. On the equinox, the length of day and night is nearly equal in all parts of the world. After the spring equinox, the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun, which is why we start to get longer, sunnier days here in the United States. Interestingly, due to time zone differences, there isn’t a March 21 equinox in the mainland U.S. during the entire 21st century! We won’t see a March 21 equinox again until 2101.  To most, the spring equinox signals new beginnings and nature’s renewal.  In fact, the March full moon is called the Worm Moon because it is at a time when the worms are beginning to come out from the winter. The flowers are popping their heads up and we are feeling the need to get outdoors.  March is a time to start gardens and sow seeds in many regions.

Meanwhile, many states face a shortage of tourism dollars due to closures of Disney parks and other destinations and layoffs are a big concern. This is a difficult time for everyone, and worries are surging. There is good and bad in everything. Even this. Although it may be an obstacle in the road, there is new growth coming also. The earth is healing and many active measures are largely in place to combat many affects of this virus. For some, this is a wonderful opportunity to slow down, recharge and spend some quality, guilt-free time with your family.

If you are looking for things to do with your family, here a few ideas for you!

There’s nothing quite like slipping into a pair of monogrammed slippers for comfort and a great feeling from head to toe. If you haven’t thought about making your own slippers now is the time to start. This project features instructions for creating an all-over quilt design using My Design Center to create quilted fabric for the slipper pieces. If this feature is not available to you, use one of the alternative options mentioned in the instructions. Download the Brother Free Design of the Month, pick a pattern, gather your supplies, and you’re well on your way to crafting a pair of comfy slippers. Embellish the toes with a personal monogram for yourself or make a pair to give as a gift. Are you ready? Let’s go sew!

Materials and Supplies

  • Brother sewing and embroidery machine. Note that these instructions show how to create quilted fabric using the Brother My Design Center option on the Luminaire XP1 machine, prior to embroidering the design. Please be sure to read the Important Notes section for more information about creating these slippers.
  • Brother Embroidery Thread, Bobbin Thread, and size 11 embroidery needle for embroidering.
  • Basic Sewing notions including sewing thread to match fabric and a removable marker or chalk.
  • Slipper pattern with toe area large enough to accommodate embroidery design. Read the recommendations in the Important Notes section below and refer to your selected pattern for fabric and notions.
  • Brother FREE Design of the Month. See below:

Important Notes Before You Begin

Basic steps for making the slippers:

  • Create oversized pieces of quilted fabric.
  • Outline the area for the main slipper pattern and embroider a monogram in the toe area.
  • Cut out and construct a pair of slippers.

There are a variety of options for creating fabric sections for these slippers:
Technique used for this sample: Use My Design Center to create large sections of stipple quilted fabric. The featured machine in this project is the Brother XP1 Luminaire with the 10 5/8” X 16” hoop, used for making stipple quilted fabric. Complete instructions are shown below for using this method on the Luminaire. Additional Brother models include the My Design Center option so you can follow the same general instructions for creating stipple quilted fabric. The Brother PE-Design 11 software program also includes options for creating stipple quilted fabric using decorative fill patterns.
Note: Depending on the size of your largest hoop, and your slipper pattern pieces, you may need to re-hoop to create larger sections of quilted fabric.
Purchase single faced pre-quilted fabric, pre-quilt your own fabric with free motion techniques, or pre-quilt fabric with straight stitches.
Skip the quilting and simply fuse thin craft fleece to the slipper pieces.

Decide on materials for main slipper piece, insole, bottom sole, and filler for quilting:
The pattern I selected included many options and ideas for materials. Note that the thickness of your filler for quilting can slightly affect the size of the finished slippers.
I chose thin fusible craft fleece, fusing it to the fabric used for my main slipper piece and insole prior to quilting. I also fused a layer to my lining piece.
For the bottom sole I opted for anti-skid gripper fabric.

Gather all your supplies and review these instructions as well as your pattern instructions before cutting pieces:
The monogram design is small, making it the perfect size for a monogram frame on the slippers. Once you have quilted your fabric you can opt to embroider the design using a 4-inch hoop.

Steps to Create Monogrammed Slippers

1. Prepare your pattern, deciding on size, and cutting pattern pieces as needed. I started by cutting the pattern and tracing it onto pattern tracing cloth, so I had a full pattern for the main slipper piece and a separate right and left sole. I used my trusty Brother P-touch label maker to identify my new pattern pieces. See Figure #2a and Figure #2b.

Figure #2a
Figure #2b

2. Use your trimmed patterns to determine how much fabric you’ll need for creating a quilted version. Prepare your fabric by quilting sections large enough for your pattern pieces. With the Luminaire’s 10 5/8” X 16” hoop I was able to create two identical quilted fabric sections for cutting the main pieces and a right and left sole. See Figure #3.

Figure #3

3. Steps for creating stipple quilted fabric in My Design Center are shown below:
Select My Design Center from the Home screen. See Figure #4.

Figure #4

Touch the Stamp Key. See Figure #5.

Figure #5

Touch the icon to choose the embroidery frame area. See Figure #6.

Figure #6

Select the 10 5/8” X 16” hoop. See Figure #7.

Figure #7

Touch the key to access the Region Property screen. See Figure #8.

Figure #8

Select the option for stipple fill and choose a thread color. See Figure #9.

Figure #9

Touch the bucket tool and then touch the screen to fill the entire area with stipple stitches. See Figure #10.

Figure #10

Touch Next and leave everything at the default setting. Touch Set and then touch OK to proceed to the Embroidery Edit screen. See Figure #11.

Figure #11

Finish by touching Embroidery. See Figure #12.

Figure #12

4. Hoop fabric for slipper and stitch the stipple pattern in a thread color that closely matches the fabric. Leave fabric undisturbed in the hoop. Transfer monogram frame design to machine. Create a combination design by adding a built-in letter from your font menu to fit the center of the floral frame. Change thread colors to coordinate with your fabric. See modified colors in Figure #13.

Figure #13

5. Place the slipper pattern over the stipple stitching. Using a removable marker trace the outline, along with the center marking for toe of slipper. See Figure #14.

Figure #14

6. Embroider design in the area, taking care to account for seam allowances. In the example shown below I used the StitchVision projection system to position my monogram design. See Figure #15a, Figure #15b, and Figure #15c.

Figure #15a
Figure #15b
Figure #15c

Repeat the steps to quilt fabric and embroider a matching monogram on the second slipper piece.

Note: If you’re using an alternative method for preparing the slipper fabric, you can mark the center of the monogram design on the fabric, and then use a 4-inch hoop with the positioning grid to position your design.
Tip: It’s easier to embroider the design on an oversized quilted section of fabric before cutting your piece to size. See Figure #16a and Figure #16b.

Figure #16a
Figure #16b

1. When you’re finished embroidering both right and left slipper pieces, construct slipper following pattern instructions. Enjoy your beautiful new creation! See additional finished views of slippers below:

Figure #7b
Figure #7b

Options and ideas:

  • For a great gift set, consider making a color coordinating robe, adding a matching monogram on a robe pocket.
  • Choose other embroidery designs to decorate the toe area of these slippers. Simply measure the area to be sure your design will fit.
  • For additional comfort and support, consider making an insole without filler to use as a thin layer over a pre-purchased support style insole.

Saturday is the rare 29th day in February, also known as Leap Day, a date that only happens every four years. Put simply, these additional 24 hours are built into the calendar to ensure that it stays in line with the Earth’s movement around the Sun. The day is even more rewarding if you have the rare day as your birthday on Feb. 29.  Several restaurants will offer birthday freebies for the group known as Leaplings, Leapsters or Leapers. If you know someone who has a birthday coming up tomorrow, you can head to Pizza Hut, Olive Garden, Krispy Kreme, 7-11, Chick-Fil-A, East Coast Wings or Sprinkle Cupcakes to name just a few, and get them free food or at least a nice discount. There are some interesting Leap Day birthdays too, like Tony Robbins, Rapper Ja Rule and  Superman.

During his time in Egypt, Caesar became convinced of the superiority of the Egyptian solar calendar, which featured 365 days and an occasional intercalary month which was inserted when astronomers observed the correct conditions in the stars. Caesar and the philosopher Sosigenes of Alexandria made one important modification: instead of relying on the stars, they would simply add a day to every fourth year.

Tradition holds that in 5th-century Ireland, St. Bridget lamented to St. Patrick that women were not allowed to propose marriage to men. So legend has it that St. Patrick designated the only day that does not occur annually, February 29, as a day on which women would be allowed to propose to men. In some places, Leap Day thus became known as Bachelor’s Day or Sadie Hawkins Day. A superstition in Greece holds that marriages that take place in a leap year will end in divorce, and in Scotland it’s thought that those born on Leap Day will live a life of untold suffering. Scottish farmers apparently also worry for their livestock – there’s an old saying that states a “leap year was never a good sheep year”.

February 30th? This even rarer date occurred in Sweden and Finland in 1712, when they added an extra Leap Day to February to help catch up their outdated Julian calendar with the new Gregorian calendar. There is, however, one race of people who celebrate February 30th every year: Hobbits. The wee folk of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings universe observe twelve 30-day months every year—including Solmath (translated in the text to February). That’s definitely one of the things most people miss when reading Lord of the Rings for the first time.

Thank goodness, the proposal situation didn’t reach everywhere. For instance, in Greece, not only it is supposedly bad luck to marry in a leap year and that all leap year marriages will end in divorce. But, there is also a superstition that divorced couples separating during a leap year will never find happiness again.  In Italy, Leap Day superstitions advise against buying a house or a car and waiting until the next year to avoid bad luck.  Russians believe that in leap years there is a greater likelihood of freak weather and a greater risk of death.  In Scotland, it’s thought that Leap Day babies will live a life of suffering. Farmers in Scotland also worry for livestock – proven by the saying “leap year was never a good sheep year.”  Another Leap Day superstition claims that Leap Year brings more death. However, with the addition of an extra day in the calendar year, it makes sense for more people to die. For centuries, astrologers believed children born on leap day have unusual talents, unique personalities, and even special powers.

If we’re looking at history a bit closer to home in the United States, then we should look at Massachusetts. The Salem witchcraft trials wasn’t a pleasant time in colonial America. There was a particularly negative connection to Leap Day as the first warrants for arrest went out on February 29th, 1692 for the Salem witchcraft trials.

It’s interesting to look back at marketing over the years. This has always been a favorite of mine. Harry Craddock, pioneering bartender at London’s Savoy Hotel in 1928 came up with a drink there. According to the 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book, “It is said to have been responsible for more proposals than any other cocktail ever mixed”. Whether or not you’re in the market for a freshly soused spouse, you can make this cocktail with Craddock’s original recipe:

1 dash lemon juice
2/3 gin
1/6 Grand Marnier
1/6 sweet vermouth
Shake, serve, garnish with a lemon peel, and enjoy the flood of bittersweet flavors. It’s like a marriage, in your mouth!

Or if your travels take you to France, pick up a copy of the rare La Bougie du Sapeur, a French parody newspaper only published once every four years on Leap Day.

Craftivism: Saving Australia’s Wildlife After Unprecedented Damage from Bush Fires

In this age of heated political debate , where the nation is polarized and deeply divided, a way to express one’s beliefs, or get behind a cause they’re passionate about with works of art, crafts, and making for a cause is trending.

During the recent Australian bush fires, I was able to witness people from all around the world come together and make items for the wildlife that was displaced. I saw women from Kentucky talking to women from Australia and the UK about the way to create a bat wrap, and pouches for kangaroo joey’s that were orphaned. Ladies from California were collaborating with ladies from Montreal.  It was an amazing. It was beautiful, in a world that seems to be so torn with such a deep rift, coming together for a common cause… to help the Animals! Who doesn’t love critters?!  Craft enthusiasts across the world worked together to create tiny mittens, blankets and pouches for animals affected by the bushfires in Australia.

“We’re a bunch of crafters who decided to do something,” said Lachute resident Shana Panasuk, a Quebecer involved in the project. “We’re going to be asking for donations and looking for companies who can ship everything. Once we have a big box of stuff, we’re going to ship them ASAP.”

The international Animal Rescue Craft Guild has more than 231,000 members, and its Canadian sister collective, the Canadian Animal Rescue Craft group, has garnered more than 10,000 devoted crafters since its creation.

Hoping to help wildlife harmed in the Australian wildfires, thousands of crafters worldwide churned out swaddling wraps for bats, hanging enclosures for kangaroos, and cozy pouches for wallabies and other animals.

The unprecedentedly fierce fires in southeast Australia have claimed the lives of at least 28 people since September, destroyed more than 2,600 homes and razed more than 10.3 million hectares (25.5 million acres), mostly in New South Wales state. The area burned is larger than the U.S. state of Indiana.

With experts estimating the animal death toll in the hundreds of millions, Australia’s federal government recently established a $50 million emergency fund for wildlife. Half of the money will go to front-line responder groups, with the other $25 million funding an advisory panel to analyze affected areas and plan for long-term habitat restoration.

“It’s not just kangaroos, it’s also baby koalas, it’s bats, and possums, and sugar gliders – all the marsupials in Australia who are used to growing up inside a pouch now don’t have a pouch to grow up inside any more,” she said.

craftivism

“I am a single mom, so I don’t really have a lot of money to donate,” she said. “But I know there is a need, and this gives us something to work for. It’s rewarding to think a bat can lay in this pouch and feel some kind of comfort.”

Alison Rouse-Cramp, a tutor in Australia, began sewing wraps for bats in October 2019 after seeing a call for them on a local wildlife Facebook page. Carers often send her photos of the bats using wraps she sewed. This and so many stories like this is craftivism at it’s finest. Crafting for a purpose or cause can bring us all together, and put so much good karma out there into the world.

A lot of times in these crises animals are forgotten, so I am just doing my bit to know I have helped in some small way,” she said. “When a carer sends me photos of their babies in items that I have made, it brings tears to my eyes.”

Animals are always in need of these wraps – not just in fire season. Despite the outpouring of supplies, experts say they do not expect to have an excess any time soon.

“Australia has a lot of iconic and lovable animals,” Sharples added, “and I think that for people to physically be able to create something, to physically create an item they know an animal will use, resonates with people more so than a cash donation and that is why we have set that up as an option or a way to help.”

craftivism

Much of the outpouring can be traced back to Anna Key, who gathered together a bunch of sewing, knitting and crochet patterns approved by wildlife rescue groups and posted them on Facebook on Jan. 4. Within a week, they had been viewed more than 17 million times, and multiple Facebook groups popped up to coordinate and collect donations.

Key, who lives in Yamba in New South Wales, said she was inspired by her mother, who was knitting animal pouches, and figured she could put her own skills in marketing to good use. She called the response to what she’s dubbed the #globalcraftmovement overwhelming, but said participants should not be discouraged.

“Rescuing our Animals is a marathon, not a sprint — this will take months if not years to even try to recover from,” she said in an email. “We will still require crafts, just need to find out what is still needed first.”

Key has heard from groups in Singapore, Portugal and Hong Kong who are making items, along with schools across the United States. In Lee, New Hampshire, 10-year-old Gibson Griffith organized an event at his church to sew dozens of bed liners for crates and cages. About 15 people donated fabric, and more than a dozen showed up to help make the liners.

“It felt really good, and after the project, all of my volunteers that were there felt really good as well,” he said.

As crafters, artists, sewists, knitters, crocheters … we’ve been blessed with talents, it’s only right and good that we should give back using the skills we’ve been blessed with, isn’t it?

One of the GS Hanmade shops, MGEDesigns has a freebie platypus key fob (ITH) design (available for download here)  that has been downloaded almost 500 times. The only request from the shop owner is that if you make the key fob and sell it, you will donate part or all of the monies back to an organization helping the Australian wildlife.  Another shop , WeLuvDizne has the ready made key fobs for sale in her shop  (buy it here) and the profits are being donated to the Aussie animal help groups.

We Must Dare To Be Great

“A soft, easy life is not worth living, if it impairs the fibre of brain and heart and muscle. We must dare to be great; and we must realize that greatness is the fruit of toil and sacrifice and high courage… For us is the life of action, of strenuous performance of duty; let us live in the harness, striving mightily; let us rather run the risk of wearing out than rusting out.”

I love to learn from great people and get inspired by their stories. Among them, Theodore Roosevelt (TR) is a favorite of mine. His story never ceases to inspire me.

I’d like to share the reasons why I find TR inspiring. After reading them, I think you will agree with me that he is a great model to learn from.

Without further ado, here are five reasons why TR is inspiring.

1. His achievements are extraordinary.

The list of TR’s achievements is almost unbelievable. He is the youngest ever U.S. president, the winner of Nobel Peace Prize, and a recipient of the Medal of Honor. He also authored more than 30 books despite his busy schedule. He even had time to become America’s first brown belt in judo!

Franklin Roosevelt, his cousin who later became U.S. President, said that TR “was the greatest man I ever knew.”

We Must Dare To Be Great
2. He excelled in all five aspects of life.

There are five aspects of life. While many people excel in just one or two, TR excelled in all five. In fact, I have yet to find another person who excels in all five aspects.

Let’s see how TR did in each:

      • Working: The list of achievements above says it all. There is no doubt about it.
      • Learning: He read three books a day while he was in the White House. Many people can’t read three books a month.
      • Physical: As mentioned above, he had a brown belt in judo. He was also a boxer. He thrived in physical activities.
      • Social: He was very good at connecting with people. In fact, he became an example in the popular book How to Win Friends and Influence People.
      • Spiritual: He maintained his integrity throughout his career. He was also a devout Christian: a Bible was found under his pillow upon his death.

We Must Dare To Be Great

3. He thrived in both “extrovert” and “introvert” activities.

Normally, people thrive in just one kind of activities that matches their personalities, either extrovert or introvert. But TR excelled in both kinds of activities.

He excelled in getting along with people, an “extrovert” activity. But he also excelled in writing, an “introvert” activity. Again, it’s difficult to find someone who excels in both.

We Must Dare To Be Great
4. He was a great learner.

TR was a curious person. He read books in different fields. He also had a photographic memory. He often cited passages from books that he hadn’t seen for years.

I think the main reason for this ability was his focus. While he was reading, he couldn’t even hear his name being called. He was totally immersed in the book.

5. He excelled in energy management.

An important factor behind TR’s achievements is his energy. His energy was so abundant that he was called “steam engines in trousers”. This abundance of energy allowed him to do things with focus and enthusiasm.

This is remarkable because he was physically weak as a child. He got sick often. But one day his dad challenged him to make his body, and he did. He began exercising intensely, and over time became the energetic person he was.

I highly recommend this awesome documentary by the great Ken Burns about the Roosevelts, it will give you an insight into why I think he was fantastic: https://www.netflix.com/title/80013283

According to Random.org, psychiatrists say that there are benefits for both parties when a random act of kindness occurs. Personally, I think the whole universe benefits, kind of like a karma thing. Ya know, like a check on the good side for human kind. It is interesting to think about this topic now. I don’t want to sound cliché but “in this day and age” it is hard to see which way the scale is balancing sometimes. I would love to write here that I think positivity is winning and the all the negative energy is being banished from our lives, but I can’t. I do think that there is more of both. There is more positive things occurring but also more negativity finding its way in. I believe that means there is more awareness and hopefully change and more tolerance will come from that.

Some say Random Acts Of Kindness Day was first created in Denver, Colorado in 1995 and Random Act of Kindness Week began in 2018. There is another theory that it all started in a Sausalito, California, restaurant in 1982 when Anne Herbert scrawled the words “practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty” on a place mat. Random Acts of Kindness, true stories of acts of kindness, was published in February 1993 and set off a chain reaction. Articles appeared in nearly every newspaper in the U.S., and hundreds of radio stations devoted airtime to the cause.

There are plenty of super easy, inexpensive ways to join in with your own random acts of kindness. If you need some ideas, run to the Random Acts Of Kindness site and there are tons of ideas.

Or you could take a look at some of the great ideas some of our shop owners have to spread kindness.

kindness rocks

Grasping onto the catch phrase “Kindness is Contagious,” A woman named Megan Murphy founded the “Kindness Rocks Project”. The goal of the project? Simple: to “connect many” and to “inspire and empower others to join us in creating a kinder world.” How is this accomplished? Even simpler: by leaving rocks painted with words of kindness and affirmation in public places for strangers to find.

You can leave these for others to find, or create a lovely display in your home. Either way, this set of 9 rocks created by Affinity Stones with encouraging and kind messages will help you to spread kindness and remind you that each of us can do our small part to create a kinder world.

Honestly, I am a little out of sorts for Super Bowl time of year. There is a lot going on in the world. Such drastic changes and happenings going on like helicopter crashes that seem unfathomable, political parties going after each other instead of working together for the better of the country, climate change :-). Even the football season was a little off, it seemed. The upsets were certainly interesting. I mean, the Dolphins, and then the Titans beat the Patriots? Clearly, there is something off this year.

But the show must go on and football, like life, continues. Super Bowl LIV, the 54th Super Bowl will decide the champion for the NFL’s 100th season. The NFC champion San Francisco 49ers will face the AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs in Miami, FL. Demi Lavato is singing the National Anthem which I can’t wait for and the half time show is going to be hot with Jennifer Lopez and Shakira. Hopefully, the commercials will be as entertaining as usual. That is another one of my favorite parts. The football, the game, the food, the commercials, it all adds up to a pretty good day. Even better if your team wins!

Believe it or not, this is the first time a Super Bowl will feature two teams with red as a primary uniform color. The Chiefs will be rocking their traditional home red jerseys with white pants, while the 49ers will wear their standard white away jerseys with gold pants. You can read more fun facts about this years Super Bowl in the article Super Bowl 2020: 54 things to know about Super Bowl 54, featuring fun facts about Chiefs vs. 49ers and more

One of the best parts about the Super Bowl is all the food!! Super Bowl parties have the greatest food to eat and munch on throughout the day leading up to the big game. I found some great recipes that I am going to try this year in 85 Best Super Bowl Recipes to Satisfy Your Hungry Game Day Guests. After you eat all that food, if you are looking for a good way to relax while you watch the game, check out these coloring pages for some Super Bowl coloring. What a great way to help keep the kids busy while the grown ups watch the game.

Of course, here at GS Handmade we certainly didn’t forget about the Super Bowl.tic

You can work on a cross stitch pattern of your pick for the Super Bowl created by Kustom Cross Stitch while you are watching! Which team are you rooting for? I have to say that this year I don’t really have a big stake in the game but I will stick with Kansas City Chiefs because those darn 49er’s took out my Green Bay Packers and I am still feeling the pain. Plus, I just like Andy Reid and I think he deserves the win.   San Francisco 49er's Cross Stitch PatternOr the San Francisco 49er’s  It is Coach Shanahan’s first Super Bowl so we will see how he holds up under the pressure. San Francisco led all playoff teams in rushing yards after ranking among the NFL’s top running teams in the regular season. If they can keep the ball on the ground instead of a passing game, they could pull off a win.

One might think that there was some kind of lovey dovey romantic background to the whole Valentine’s Day tradition, but that is not exactly the case. As it turns out, nobody really knows the true history behind this holiday, nor do any of the theories completely check out. Even historians find themselves arguing over the exact traditions from which the present-day holiday takes inspiration. The holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival, which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. The holiday has expanded to expressions of affection among relatives and friends. I had no idea at the time how pivotal the movie would end up being. All I knew was everyone was going to the movies to see the new cool looking Star Wars movie. It was a small college town back then with only one movie theater. Not much to do, especially in the frigid Wisconsin winters. The movie played week after week and we went to it week after week. I think I went about 22 times and I had friends that went more than that. The boys acted it out, the girls put posters of Hans Solo and Luke Skywalker on their bedroom walls.

It is nothing less than amazing to me that all these years later, another one is getting ready to come out and it is still the phenomenon that was started back then. People are scalping tickets to the new movie on street corners and EBay for up to $100. Disney has an entire section devoted to it on their website filled with fun trivia, coloring pages and games for the kids HERE. More fun can be found on the Boy’s Life website where they have a great article called. “50 Funny Stars Jokes and Comics.” Are you a Star Wars fan? There are a lot of them out there. See if you can stack up against them with this fun Star Wars quiz!

Of course, GS Handmade shops have got in on some of the fun! Take a look at these fun Star Wars items.

crochet dishclothThe time has come. Halloween has flown by like a ghost slipping in your window. Thanksgiving is over and the leftovers are finally gone. The time for decorating for Christmas is finally here! I don’t know about you, but I use this time to do a “Fall Cleaning” and as I clear out spaces to make room for new holiday decor. I can clean under and in between easier before I put new things up. There is just something about the last big clean when you throw open the windows and it is kind of cold in the house but its ok because you are busy.

This Crochet Dishcloth Set of 3 by Just Bobbin Along measures approximately 7” square, though some may be slightly larger. This set contains 1 cream colored, 1 brick red, and 1 smokey blue. These dishcloths are the perfect accent for your kitchen. They are a soft 100% cotton and stand up the the toughest cleaning jobs. They are versatile- being found in the kitchen, bathroom, and used around the house for dusting. These dishcloths are sturdy and economical.  They make a great housewarming gift or holiday gift. Then again, you may not be in the mood for cleaning.

After cleaning and moving things around, the tree can go up and the real decorating can begin. In my house we have to go through a couple of days of debate. Real or artificial? I want real. We usually have artificial because we do have the darn thing packed away. It is interesting to see among my family and friends who puts their holiday decorations up the same way every single year or do they try to change it up some. I know some that literally buy new everything every year! I go for a happy medium. I love all the decorations that I already have but I like to add something new every year to help me remember each year.

Christmas Snowflake Card GarlandDo you get a million holiday cards but struggle to find a place for them all?
Do you use scotch tape to adhere them to the wall, only to have them fall off every 5 minutes? Do you wish you had something that helped display those wonderful cards you get every year? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then the Snowflake Christmas Card Holder Garland by A Crafty Mama Company is just what you need. Not only does it give you a way to display all those wonderful holiday cards you receive during the holidays, but it also doubles as beautiful holiday decor. Just over 5′ long you can display garland just about anywhere inside your home. Around an entryway, hanging from your mantle or even your breakfast bar, or simply hung on a wall. No matter how you display this piece, it is sure to make a beautiful addition to your holiday decor. Garland includes 9 snowflake clips for attaching holiday cards or pictures and is approximately 64″ long. Snowflake clips are adjustable and can be moved.

Stocking stuffers are one of the best parts of Christmas. It can be so much fun if you get a little creative instead of always doing the same things every year. One year we did snacks and drinks in stockings. One year it was all balled up dollar bills. My personal favorite is sending them on a scavenger hunt from hints in their stockings. It makes the magic of Christmas morning last a little bit longer. I signed the Handmade Pledge this year so my stocking stuffers and all my gifts for people will be handmade! It’s going to be a great year for presents! All month long we will be Rocking the Stocking Stuffers! You can check them out HERE!

Unique, Handmade Gifts for Teachers on GS Handmade

Teachers are seriously the unsung heroes if there ever was one. Their pay is dismal and many times it can be pretty unrewarding and disheartening. It is not the exception, but the norm that teachers regularly take money out of their own pockets for supplies for their students and classrooms. Considering they don’t make all that much to begin with, this has got to be putting a hardship on them, yet they keep doing it.

At GS Handmade, we value all the teachers out there and all they do. They deserve more.

Michelle Waters owner of Scrapper’s Snips and Stitches says, “Teaching will never provide a fat bank account, but you will be richly blessed. Your student is more important than your lesson. (Once, while teaching a lesson on the importance of the writing process, one of my students interrupted me by asking, “Mrs. Waters, did I tell you that on Saturday a man put a gun to my head?” From that moment on, my purpose for being a teacher took a different path. )”

Kim Barry of Allica Designs made it pretty simple – Teach~Love~Inspire.
Sunflower teacher magnet

This fun magnet from Allica Designswill dress up your fridge, white board, file cabinets, or any metal surface, all while holding up your pictures, business cards, papers, child’s art work, or grocery list. The magnet will hold at least 5 pieces of paper, depending on the weight of the paper.

We all had our favorite teacher when we were is school though, right? Even better than having your own favorites though, I think, is watching it happen for your child. Sometimes a kid for whatever reason is having a hard time in school or just isn’t interested and that one teacher comes along that they connect with. It’s like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders and their eyes open.

Mandy's Joys

This super fun glass mason jar tumbler from Mandy’s Joys is made to look like a jar of grape jelly/jam with the words “Teaching is my Jam” on the front label! This full glitter mason jar has a lid with a gasket in the lid to allow the straw to fit. The back of this 24 ounce mason jar features a “nutrition” label with fun “ingredients” that make up a wonderful teacher!

This item will be made to order. Please allow approximately three weeks processing time to ensure safe shipping.

This mason jar tumbler is completely sealed with FDA compliant epoxy – this has the glitter completely sealed and the jar labels protected for long term use and enjoyment! The glitter used on all of my tumblers is high quality polyester that resists fading and keeps the sparkle.

Thanksgiving truly gets the short end of the stick at my house. That makes me a little sad because fall is my favorite time of year. I miss it, honestly. When I was a kid it was a big deal at my house. That one holiday alone was worthy of a complete family reunion with aunts, uncles, cousins and a mountain of mouth watering foods. Times have changed though and the way it worked out for me was if I wanted my children for Christmas, I had to let my ex-husband have them for Thanksgiving. Well, there went Thanksgiving because there was no way my children would be anywhere but home in their own beds on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. My two younger children didn’t care or want some big turkey dinner and we had moved away from most of our family. My idea of what Thanksgiving was completely fell apart and I never really got it back. Although, I might make up for it with going a little overboard with the whole Christmas joy thing, but I don’t even care.

Fall is still my favorite time of year and I love to decorate for the season. I think its the colors that get me. The rich, dark greens and reds and oranges make everything so elegant and pretty. If you are not super busy with Thanksgiving festivities, it can be a good time for a little self care too. Gear up for the month of December and all the craziness that brings. Take a nice, quiet break to catch up on things and think about how you would like to end this year and begin the new one. Don’t forget to take a moment to remember all the people and things you are thankful for in your life this year.

Whether you do the huge family Thanksgiving or spend your time reflecting, GS Handmade has plenty of Thanksgiving items to help you enjoy your holiday! Take a look!

Or, as I like to call it, A Little Insight Into the GS Handmade Admin Team

Hi, my name is Lisa and I am a member of the blog team for GS Handmade. In our quest to provide a more consistent, better quality blog for GS Handmade, I had planned a post for World Diabetes Day on the 14th of this month. I contacted Alysa, another member of our team and asked her to help me out with it. I picked her because she has child that has been living with Type 1 Diabetes for 10 years now.  I have a son with diabetes, my mom and husband both had it and other members of GS Handmade have it themselves or a family member has it. In fact, if I am not mistaken, our fearless leader Goose has it. I picked Alysa for this because I have never met a person, doctors and nurses included, that seems to understand the ins and outs of this disease and can explain to other people it in such way that it doesn’t just sound like ⇓

like Alysa can. It is like a part of her being or something. She was happy to do it for me and quickly wrote some things up for me to start with. The week before the 14th, a virus hit my house like a ton of bricks. First, my older son got sick. As always, he worked through it and it barely phased him. Then, it hit me and my younger son at the same time. He is the diabetic. He was only diagnosed a year ago and at 21 years old, he had been handling it well. 24 hours later, I dragged myself out of bed to check on him again and he was still feeling really bad and he didn’t look much better. I decided that he should probably go to the ER and get some fluids. I have been dehydrated before and assumed that was what he needed. Ironically, a couple of days before World Diabetes Day I was told that my son was in ketoacidosis (a medical emergency) and as much as I thought I was knowledgeable and aware of this disease, I was in complete shock. The first person I contacted was Alysa and thankfully and with a lot of help, we got through it. So, although I did not get this up in time for World Diabetes Day, this information is important no matter what day it is.

GS Handmade Has You Covered for World Diabetes Day

Every November 14th we celebrate World Diabetes Day, but do you know why we celebrate on this day? November 14th is a significant date in the diabetes calendar because it marks the birthday of the man who co-discovered insulin, Frederick Banting. Banting discovered insulin in 1922, alongside Charles Best. You can read more about Dr. Banting here if you would like more information on how that came about.

On this day we focus on educating the public about the two most prominent types of Diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes.

Although the two share a similar name, they are completely independent of one another.

Knowing the difference can save yours or your child’s life.

One final thought from Alysa as I have been on a bit of an emotional roller coaster with all that has been going on with my son and she reminded me:

How amazing is it to love someone so deeply that you can’t control your emotions. How lucky are we that some people never get to experience true love and we have. How many people never get to meet their hero and we get to raise ours or sit next to them at the dinner table every night. The memories alone are awesome. Crying isn’t a bad thing. It is totally not a sign of weakness. It is more a sign of passion and a complete and utter expression of love.

Frozen 2 : Reviews, Chat and Quotes

Let’s chat a lil’ bit about Frozen 2. One reason it’s such a magical Disney movie is because the focus is on the beyond between sisters, rather than the desire for the love of a prince. It’s a love story like no other.

Plus, who doesn’t love Olaf’s happy, always sunny side up, positive outlook? He’s a fan favorite for very good reason!

With Frozen 2 hitting theaters just in time for Thanksgiving, I’m certain Disney will continue the theme of “family”. I’m excited to see these sisters embark on exciting adventures and face new challenges together.

What are the critics saying about this much anticipated sequel to the 2013 original?

Will Frozen 2 live up to the expectations following its successor or will moviegoers hope Disney will “let it go”?

The anticipated sequel, standing at 84 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, picks up three years after the 2013 film and centers on Elsa (Idina Menzel), Anna (Kristen Bell), Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), Olaf (Josh Gad) and Sven embarking on a journey that goes beyond their homeland of Arendelle to discover the origin of Elsa’s powers and to save their kingdom.

In The Hollywood Reporter, critic Todd McCarthy teases that the audience should “expect the unexpected” when it comes to the new installment of the popular Disney film. However, Disney abides by the same successful formula of “catchy new songs, more time with easy-to-like characters, striking backdrops, cute little jokes” and a “voyage of discovery plot and female empowerment galore.” McCarthy notes that the film’s storyline “flirts with the dark side,” but ventures into colorful destinations sure to satisfy both original and new fans.

He also commends Jennifer Lee’s script — Lee also wrote the first installment and co-directed both with Chris Buck — for revamping Elsa as a “serious role model/inspiration for girls and young women” by portraying a resident and positive character “able to overcome any challenge in her path.” By adding elements of darkness into the lighthearted story, McCarthy writes that Lee is able to create a “desired balance among drama, excitement, comedy, suspense, action and inspiration.” Though it’s conspicuous that there are “many cooks” in the Disney kitchen, McCarthy notes that the overall recipe for the sequel is a “good one.”

Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair notes that while children at the screening he attended found Anna and Elsa’s latest adventure “pretty exciting, pretty funny, pretty transporting,” as confirmed by “giddy shrieks and laughs,” he isn’t as convinced the follow-up was so great or so necessary. Trying to justify its need, Lawson writes that the Frozen team was “forced to go bigger, grander, more existential, while still keeping things accessible to children” and ultimately became a “balancing act” the sequel couldn’t handle. Despite the story offering more to the sister-princess duo’s identities and gifting Elsa an exploration story similar to that of Vanellope’s in Ralph Breaks the Internet, Frozen 2‘s “discoveries are rushed and are served up half-baked.”

Elsa: What would I do without you?
Anna: You’ll always have me.
