Or, as I like to call it, A Little Insight Into the GS Handmade Admin Team

Hi, my name is Lisa and I am a member of the blog team for GS Handmade. In our quest to provide a more consistent, better quality blog for GS Handmade, I had planned a post for World Diabetes Day on the 14th of this month. I contacted Alysa, another member of our team and asked her to help me out with it. I picked her because she has child that has been living with Type 1 Diabetes for 10 years now.  I have a son with diabetes, my mom and husband both had it and other members of GS Handmade have it themselves or a family member has it. In fact, if I am not mistaken, our fearless leader Goose has it. I picked Alysa for this because I have never met a person, doctors and nurses included, that seems to understand the ins and outs of this disease and can explain to other people it in such way that it doesn’t just sound like ⇓

like Alysa can. It is like a part of her being or something. She was happy to do it for me and quickly wrote some things up for me to start with. The week before the 14th, a virus hit my house like a ton of bricks. First, my older son got sick. As always, he worked through it and it barely phased him. Then, it hit me and my younger son at the same time. He is the diabetic. He was only diagnosed a year ago and at 21 years old, he had been handling it well. 24 hours later, I dragged myself out of bed to check on him again and he was still feeling really bad and he didn’t look much better. I decided that he should probably go to the ER and get some fluids. I have been dehydrated before and assumed that was what he needed. Ironically, a couple of days before World Diabetes Day I was told that my son was in ketoacidosis (a medical emergency) and as much as I thought I was knowledgeable and aware of this disease, I was in complete shock. The first person I contacted was Alysa and thankfully and with a lot of help, we got through it. So, although I did not get this up in time for World Diabetes Day, this information is important no matter what day it is.

GS Handmade Has You Covered for World Diabetes Day

Every November 14th we celebrate World Diabetes Day, but do you know why we celebrate on this day? November 14th is a significant date in the diabetes calendar because it marks the birthday of the man who co-discovered insulin, Frederick Banting. Banting discovered insulin in 1922, alongside Charles Best. You can read more about Dr. Banting here if you would like more information on how that came about.

On this day we focus on educating the public about the two most prominent types of Diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes.

Although the two share a similar name, they are completely independent of one another.

Knowing the difference can save yours or your child’s life.

If any of the above information sounds familiar, please contact your healthcare professional to discuss your concerns.

Bolus – meal time insulin via pump

One final thought from Alysa as I have been on a bit of an emotional roller coaster with all that has been going on with my son and she reminded me:

How amazing is it to love someone so deeply that you can’t control your emotions. How lucky are we that some people never get to experience true love and we have. How many people never get to meet their hero and we get to raise ours or sit next to them at the dinner table every night. The memories alone are awesome. Crying isn’t a bad thing. It is totally not a sign of weakness. It is more a sign of passion and a complete and utter expression of love.

Frozen 2 : Reviews, Chat and Quotes

Let’s chat a lil’ bit about Frozen 2. One reason it’s such a magical Disney movie is because the focus is on the beyond between sisters, rather than the desire for the love of a prince. It’s a love story like no other.

Plus, who doesn’t love Olaf’s happy, always sunny side up, positive outlook? He’s a fan favorite for very good reason!

With Frozen 2 hitting theaters just in time for Thanksgiving, I’m certain Disney will continue the theme of “family”. I’m excited to see these sisters embark on exciting adventures and face new challenges together.

What are the critics saying about this much anticipated sequel to the 2013 original?

Will Frozen 2 live up to the expectations following its successor or will moviegoers hope Disney will “let it go”?

The anticipated sequel, standing at 84 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, picks up three years after the 2013 film and centers on Elsa (Idina Menzel), Anna (Kristen Bell), Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), Olaf (Josh Gad) and Sven embarking on a journey that goes beyond their homeland of Arendelle to discover the origin of Elsa’s powers and to save their kingdom.

In The Hollywood Reporter, critic Todd McCarthy teases that the audience should “expect the unexpected” when it comes to the new installment of the popular Disney film. However, Disney abides by the same successful formula of “catchy new songs, more time with easy-to-like characters, striking backdrops, cute little jokes” and a “voyage of discovery plot and female empowerment galore.” McCarthy notes that the film’s storyline “flirts with the dark side,” but ventures into colorful destinations sure to satisfy both original and new fans.

He also commends Jennifer Lee’s script — Lee also wrote the first installment and co-directed both with Chris Buck — for revamping Elsa as a “serious role model/inspiration for girls and young women” by portraying a resident and positive character “able to overcome any challenge in her path.” By adding elements of darkness into the lighthearted story, McCarthy writes that Lee is able to create a “desired balance among drama, excitement, comedy, suspense, action and inspiration.” Though it’s conspicuous that there are “many cooks” in the Disney kitchen, McCarthy notes that the overall recipe for the sequel is a “good one.”

Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair notes that while children at the screening he attended found Anna and Elsa’s latest adventure “pretty exciting, pretty funny, pretty transporting,” as confirmed by “giddy shrieks and laughs,” he isn’t as convinced the follow-up was so great or so necessary. Trying to justify its need, Lawson writes that the Frozen team was “forced to go bigger, grander, more existential, while still keeping things accessible to children” and ultimately became a “balancing act” the sequel couldn’t handle. Despite the story offering more to the sister-princess duo’s identities and gifting Elsa an exploration story similar to that of Vanellope’s in Ralph Breaks the Internet, Frozen 2‘s “discoveries are rushed and are served up half-baked.”

Elsa: What would I do without you?
Anna: You’ll always have me.

The Disney focused makers on GS Handmade have been so excited about the release of this film. If you’re going, go in style , courtesy of the GS Handmade makers. Halloween has flown by and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. This is a very special time of year filled with amazing food, family, traditions and hopefully a whole lot of joy. Thanksgiving feels a little like the calm before the storm of Christmas. One last day to relax and enjoy yourself before the chaos of December is upon us. There is also plenty going on to keep anyone from getting bored. The Macy’s Day Parade is happening and there is plenty of football and dog shows to have on the television for those that need to rest after all the food.  Virgina Hooper from Lace and Sneakers shared  “On Thanksgiving Eve we got to be tasters of the goodies Mama was cooking. Of course we always watched the parades on Thanksgiving and Christmas.”

Speaking of food, more and more people are buying locally than ever, not to mention eating more healthy.  Nancy Davis from our shop, WeLuThanksgiving Day Check List SimplevDizne says “We LOVE this keto pumpkin mousse.  If you are enjoying a new keto lifestyle the Holidays may worry you. Take a look at this article for some tips to help you through the season. If you are like some of us, you may just skip over a lot of this stuff and go straight to the gift shopping for our loved ones.

Handmade items truly become collectibles. So many times an item is created as a collaboration of ideas and knowledge. In, addition to the uniqueness of the piece, the ability to tweak and customize an item adds something very personal, not only to the person receiving it or gifting it, but to the person that made it. The joy of making something that someone loves with your own two hands is an intense satisfaction. Look at some of the amazing talent Gypsy Spoonful has created for this Halloween season.

Many handmade items have an interesting link to the past that not only keeps traditions alive, but is a strong reminder of a time when quality was what really meant something, rather than quantity. They bring back a time when the environment was safe from so much of the damage that has come with the invent of technology that has allowed mass production to take over. Costumes are a perfect example. Store bought costumes today are made with products that don’t withstand time and wear past that one use and end up quickly littering the land fills with toxic materials that are far from environmentally friendly. Take a look at the difference in costumes on Gypsy Spoonful!

As another year of shark week comes to a close, how are you feeling? Did you get enough shark week? How does this year compare to previous years? Did you have a shark week party? Loving it and wanting more? Well, here it is!

Shark Week originally premiered on July 17, 1988. It has been featured annually since then. It was originally devoted to conservation efforts and correcting misconceptions about sharks. Over time, it grew in popularity and became a huge hit on the Discovery Channel with a lineup of new shows all about sharks, including the theme week’s first original movie.

“Capsized: Blood in the Water,” based on a true story, stars Josh Duhamel as the captain of a yacht that capsizes in a Florida storm as its crew is chased by sharks. Capsized: Blood in the Water‘s ending provides a follow-up on the lives of Brad and Deborah following their rescue. After five days without food and water, the sole survivors were picked up by the Russians on October 28, 1982.

One thing that hasn’t changed this year is the shark week parties that are happening. There is one woman that does amazing drinks every year for shark week! Check her out HERE!  Don’t forget the kids! Need fun and food for the little ones during the party? Check THIS out. Looking for more activities for the kids to do during shark week?  Check out this great list HERE for more fun! Patriotism is such a strong, dignified word. While the times we live in seem to be dividing us, the summer holidays that are approaching hopefully give all people something to relate to, something to bring people together. The definition of patriotism according to Dictionary.com is

noun
devoted love, support, and defense of one’s country; national loyalty.

Perception is everything though, and the word patriotism means different things to different people. For example, a couple of our Gypsy shop owners offered what comes to their mind when they think of patriotism:

“I am a born and raised NY’er. I lived in NY when our country was attacked. The worst act of terrorism we have ever seen on US soil. My uncle walked from Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn then over the Verrazzano Bridge to get home to Staten Island. He walked the entire way covered in soot. It took us hours to get in touch with our family to make sure they were safe because honestly we didn’t know. Cell phones weren’t working and most land lines were busy because so many people were trying to get in touch with their loved ones. It was terrifying and there was nothing we could do. We were in the dark. I ran to get my daughter from daycare and cried as I watched the second plane fly directly into the towers. My husband couldn’t get home fast enough. The next day and for many days that followed we were all just Americans. We weren’t black or white. Red or Brown. Jewish or Christian. We were all for one and one for all. We were kind. We all came together as a country. We stood strong together. This is the America I want to live in. The America where we stand strong together and fight for our freedoms. The very freedoms that terrorists are so threatened by. I am so proud to be an American. I am even more proud of the men and women who fight to protect our freedoms. Idk if that helps but it is exactly how I have felt every single day since 9/11. Never Forget.”

“Patriotism to me is a feeling. It’s pride in my country and the men and women that serve it, including one of my sons. It’s a sense of belonging to something bigger than me.”

“We are the UNITED states of America, and we should each have our own identity, but still be a part of the big picture. We should stand together, not be divided by the color of our skin, gender, orientation, religious beliefs or anything else. We should love our neighbors and help anyone when we can. We should teach our children what Memorial Day, The Fourth of July, and Veterans Day mean and why we have these holidays. Teach them that it’s not just a day to be off work and have a backyard party. It’s not about donning red, white, and blue and waving the flag. It’s about standing for the flag and honoring the men and women who have selflessly sacrificed for our freedoms.”

Save The Bees

Bees, Honey, Bee Hives , and Everything Honey is definitely a HOT trend right now. Why the sudden popularity in bees?

Bees, once considered a nuisance because of their alleged ornery disposition are in the spotlight these days. There has  been a fantastic increase in public awareness over the past few years, leading many to set up hives in their gardens and on their roofs. Bees are also making their presence known in the handmade world as well.. they’re showing up in hair bows, fabric prints, wreaths, garden decor and just about anywhere you can imagine in home decor~ Believe it or not, you have a bee to thank for every one in three bites of food you eat. Honey bees — wild and domestic — perform about 80 percent of all pollination worldwide. A single bee colony can pollinate 300 million flowers each day. Grains are primarily pollinated by the wind, but fruits, nuts and vegetables are pollinated by bees. Seventy out of the top 100 human food crops — which supply about 90 percent of the world’s nutrition — are pollinated by bees.

Save the Bees

What’s Killing the Bees — and Why It Matters

Worldwide bee colony collapse is not as big a mystery as the chemical industry claims.

The systemic nature of the problem makes it complex, but not impenetrable. Scientists know that bees are dying from a variety of factors—pesticides, drought, habitat destruction, nutrition deficit, air pollution, global warming and more. Many of these causes are interrelated. The bottom line is that we know humans are largely responsible for the two most prominent causes: pesticides and habitat loss.

Worker bees (females) live about six weeks in summer and several months in the winter. Colonies produce new worker bees continuously during the spring and summer, and then reproduction slows during the winter. Typically, a bee hive or colony will decline by 5-10 percent over the winter, and replace those lost bees in the spring. In a bad year, a bee colony might lose 15-20 percent of its bees.

In the U.S., winter losses have commonly reached 30-50 percent, in some cases more. In 2006, David Hackenberg — a bee keeper for 42 years — reported a 90 percent die-off among his 3,000 hives. U.S. National Agricultural Statistics show a honey bee decline from about 6 million hives in 1947 to 2.4 million hives in 2008, a 60 percent reduction.

The number of working bee colonies per hectare provides a critical metric of crop health. In the U.S. — among crops that require bee pollination — the number of bee colonies per hectare has declined by 90 percent since 1962. The bees cannot keep pace with the winter die-off rates and habitat loss.

These alarming facts have caused an uptick in gardener’s planning, many are adding bee-friendly plant species in their home gardens, and many are even adding bee homes, skeps and hives. Leading to the trend in urban bee-keeping.

20 Fun Facts all About Bees:

  • Honey bees must gather nectar from two million flowers to make one pound of honey.
  • One bee has to fly about 90,000 miles – three times around the globe – to make one pound of honey.
  • The average bee will make only 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime.
  • Honey bees visit 50 to 100 flowers during a collection trip.

  • A honey bee can fly for up to six miles, and as fast as 15 miles per hour.
  • The bee’s brain is oval in shape and about the size of a sesame seed, yet it has a remarkable capacity to learn and remember things. For example, it is able to make complex calculations on distance travelled and foraging efficiency.
  • Honey bees communicate with one another by dancing.

Crochet Baby Blanket and Bee Doll by Scorpion and Ram

  • A colony of bees consists of 20,000-60,000 honey bees and one queen. Worker honey bees are female, live for about 6 weeks and do all the work.
  • The queen bee can live up to 5 years and is the only bee that lays eggs. She is the busiest in the summer months, when the hive needs to be at its maximum strength, and lays up to 2500 eggs per day.
  • Larger than the worker bees, the male honey bees (also called drones), have no stinger and do no work. All they do is mate.

  • Honey has always been highly regarded as a medicine. It is thought to help with everything from sore throats and digestive disorders to skin problems and hay fever.
  • Honey has antiseptic properties and was historically used as a dressing for wounds and a first aid treatment for burns and cuts.
  • The natural fruit sugars in honey – fructose and glucose – are quickly digested by the body. This is why sportsmen and athletes use honey to give them a natural energy boost.

  • Honey bees have been producing honey in the same way for 150 million years.
  • The honey bee is the only insect that produces food eaten by man.
  • Honey lasts an incredibly long time. An explorer who found a 2000 year old jar of honey in an Egyptian tomb said it tasted delicious!

  • The bees’ buzz is the sound made by their wings which beat 11,400 times per minute.
  • When a bee finds a good source of nectar it flies back to the hive and shows its friends where the nectar source is by doing a dance which positions the flower in relation to the sun and hive. This is known as the ‘waggle dance.’
  • Honey’s ability to attract and retain moisture means that it has long been used as a beauty treatment. It was part of Cleopatra’s daily beauty ritual.
  • Honey is incredibly healthy and includes enzymes, vitamins, minerals. It’s the only food that contains “pinocembrin”, an antioxidant associated with improved brain functioning.

The new LIVE ACTION Disney Movie , Aladdin will be dropping on May 24th! There is still time to get some awesome Aladdin related themed items from the Gypsy Spoonful marketplace! If you’re heading to Disney or you’re planning an Aladdin themed birthday party , we can get you all decked out!

When Disney’s Aladdin debuted in theaters 25 years ago, it opened up a whole new world for Disney animation. We can’t wait to see the live action version! As if the original wasn’t awesome enough, this new live action version is something that has been highly anticipated from Disney fans!

Aladdin

Until now, the teaser trailers for Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin, out May 24, have been greeted by audiences with a lot of wincing and a side of curiosity. The first teaser, which debuted in October, contained a lot of pomp but very few glimpses of the verisimilitude (and copious CGI magic) we’ve come to expect from Disney’s live-action spectacles so far (see: Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book). It mainly showed off a lot of sand and rock.

The second teaser was better, in that it offered a slightly better idea of what to expect from the remake. But it also gave rise to bafflement and skepticism when Will Smith’s genie turned out to look like little more than Will Smith in blue body paint. It also didn’t help that photos from director Guy Ritchie’s set made live-action Aladdin look like a strangely low-budget experiment — a long way from the dazzling, colorful mythical city of Agrabah that Aladdin fans remember from the 1992 animated classic.

But now, finally, Disney’s first full-length trailer for the film has given audiences a proper look at Aladdin’s world, and it’s starting to resemble the fun, snappy tale of adventure that fans know and love. The genie, especially, seems to have more punch, pizazz, yahoo, and how! — while Mena Massoud’s Aladdin gets to show off some of his wry street-rat wiles. Robin Williams spot is definitely going to be hard to fill but we have confidence that Will Smith will rock it!

Aladdin

Gypsy Spoonful makers have been very excited about the film, and we have an awesome showcase of themed items just for your browsing pleasure:

Aladdin

The original animated film — part of what many now refer to as the Disney Renaissance alongside The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and more — shook things up with its more adult sense of humor and constant stream of jokes and pop culture references courtesy of Robin Williams’ Genie.

EW critic Chris Nashawaty described Aladdin as “candy-colored kiddie entertainment and as a more sophisticated joke delivery system for the grown-ups in the audience” in 2015. “As wonderful and beautiful and seminal as The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast were, it was Robin Williams’ antic, pop-culture-riffing Genie who really invented that one-for-the-kids/one-for-the-adults joke formula that has become the contemporary blueprint of just about every animated film, whether it’s created by Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, you name it, ever since,” he wrote.

Image Map

Here are 25 interesting bits of trivia about the film.

  1. Genie was originally conceived as a black character in the style of Fats Waller and Harlem stride-piano playing from the 1940s.
  2. The trumpet sound Robin Williams vocalizes in “Friend Like Me” was originally supposed to be instrumental until he improvised it.
  3. The peddler at the opening of the film (who is also the narrator) is actually the Genie in disguise – directors Ron Clements and John Musker confirmed this long-held fan theory in 2015.
  4. Princess Jasmine was partially based on Audrey Hepburn’s iconic civilian-for-a-day princess exploring Rome with Gregory Peck in Roman Holiday.
  5. Lyricist Howard Ashman wrote the original 40-page treatment for the film complete with songs and it was envisioned as a campy 1930s musical – a lot of his version was scrapped but has been revived in the Broadway version of the show.
  6. The 1940 film The Thief of Baghdad was a major source of inspiration for the movie. The name of the villain Jafar comes from that movie and there is a human sidekick named “Abu,” whose moniker became that of Aladdin’s pet monkey.
  7. Howard Ashman wrote “Prince Ali” from his hospital bed while suffering from symptoms of AIDS. The last song he ever wrote was a piece for Jafar called “Humiliate the Boy” that did not end up in the final film.
  8. One of the earlier versions of the film featured a younger Aladdin, and his relationship with his mother was central to the film, including a song called “Proud of Your Boy” which has found a second life on Broadway.
  9. “A Whole New World” and the idea of a romantic flying magic carpet ride came from a scene in Superman (1978) where Superman (Christopher Reeve) flies Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) through the night sky.
  10. Robin Williams recorded four four-hour sessions with a ton of improvisation (that’s 16 hours of material!) for the animators to study intensely while bringing the Genie to life – animators transcribed every word from these sessions and selected what they wanted to include in the film.
  11. The film originally ended with a reprise of “Arabian Nights.” Eventually, the song was used in the third film, direct-to-video sequel Aladdin and the King of Thieves.
  12. Robin Williams was the first major movie star to voice an animated role, and he opened the door for actors like Tom Hanks, Mike Meyers, and more to take on animated characters.
  13. The directors of the film, Ron Clements and John Musker, have voice cameos as two men in the marketplace outside the palace. Listen here.
  14. The Genie’s lamp can be seen on the back of treasure-hoarding crab Tamatoa in Moana, also directed by Clements and Musker.
  15. To convince Williams to take the part of the Genie, animator Eric Goldberg animated some segments of the Genie to recordings of Williams’ comedy albums.
  16. The voice of Aladdin, Scott Weinger, is also D.J. Tanner’s high school boyfriend Steve on Full House. The TV series made a funny nod to this when D.J. imagines Aladdin is Steve while missing him on a trip to Disney World.
  17. Lyrics in “Arabian Nights” were changed for the film’s video release after the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee flagged them as offensive. They originally read, “Oh, I come from a land/From a faraway place/Where the caravan camels roam/Where they cut off your ear/If they don’t like your face/It’s barbaric, but hey, it’s home.” They changed the questionable lyric to “where it’s flat and immense, and the heat is intense.”
  18. The Return of Jafar marked Disney’s first ever direct-to-video sequel and its immense financial success (in 1996 it was in the top 20 video releases of all time) prompted a slew of such titles, including a third Aladdin film.
  19. Howard Ashman initially passed on Beauty and the Beast because he was so passionate about making this film and wanted to have time to finish it before succumbing to his illness. He posthumously won an Oscar for Beauty and the Beast, and Tim Rice finished the Aladdin lyrics after he passed away.
  20. Animators reportedly based the look of Aladdin on Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future initially and then, once they decided to make him older, on Tom Cruise.
  21. Animator Glen Keane said he had to turn to videos of MC Hammer dancing to know how to animate the movement of Aladdin’s iconic “harem” style pants.
  22. Jafar’s character design, down to his staff and his bird henchman, is based on iconic Disney villain Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty.
  23. Animators looked to caricaturist Al Hirschfeld for his inspiration in creating their line-heavy characters.
  24. The Genie’s final outfit of a Hawaiian shirt and a Goofy hat appear to be based on Robin William’s outfit in a 1989 Disney-MGM studios short called Back to Neverland.

The Psychology of Smell

Scent is a powerful tool. Between my interest in psychology and my use of fragrance in my bath & body products, I decided to compose a post about the psychology behind our sense of smell.

Our sense of smell, or olfaction, is very important to our every day life. We use it distinguish thousands upon thousands of different scents. It can warn us of danger, such as spoiled food or an unseen fire, as well as inform us of something good. Many times our sense of smell is an instinctual or subconscious power. Did you know that it goes into a deeper subconscious level than you may sometimes realize? Complex emotions and memories can be triggered by a simple sensory cue. From the smell of coffee taking you back to Sunday afternoons in your Grandma’s kitchen, to the smell of leather taking you back to your first competitive horse run. Smells are very closely tied into our memories.

Many people undervalue the power scent can have. Fragrances have the ability to bring forth both positive and negative psychological states of mind and reactions in just milliseconds.  People may not even notice when buying something such as a lotion that they gravitate toward fragrances based on their personal experiences. The more vivid the memory/emotion attached to a fragrance, the more preferred it is and more likely it is to be purchased by said personThe Psychology of Smell

So why are scents linked in with our memories? It is said to be most likely due to our brain anatomy. When scents come through your nose, they are processed by the olfactory bulb which runs along the bottom of the brain. The bulb is connected to two parts of your brain that are involved in memories and emotions, these are the amygdala and hippocampus. Smell is most strongly associated with memories and emotions because they run through these parts of the brain, whereas our other senses do not pas information through these parts of the brain.

While most scent associations are based on your personal experiences and history, there are some cultural smell-related perceptions. For example, North America and Europe heavily associate lavender with being calming and citrus with being bright and invigorating. Meanwhile, Japan associated jasmine with relaxing and rose water as energizing/happy. So some of these things are a learned subconscious (or even conscious) response to fragrance.

Essentially, fragrance is a huge driving factor in our every day life. If it brings bad memories, we avoid it. If it brings good, we flock to it and surround ourselves with it. Whether it boosts our productivity or helps us to relax, we use scent to shape our daily life all the time.

For the last year and a half I’ve really enjoyed this magazine I stumbled upon one day. It actually had a small hand in my initial interest in learning about creating bath and body items. I don’t even remember where I found it, it might have been Sam’s club (we go there a lot). I glanced through it and instantly was drawn to it. This magazine is called Willow & Sage. As stated on their website-

Willow and Sage Magazine

Willow and Sage magazine is filled with more than 70 unique recipes, uses, and beautiful packaging ideas for homemade bath and body products, paired alongside stunning, Somerset-style photography. In addition to showcasing natural bath salts and soaks, soaps, face masks, chemical-free make-up, lotions, sugar scrubs, how to use essential oils, and more, Willow and Sage features refreshing new layout designs that include hand-illustrated tips and educational information, such as eye-catching infographics and the benefits of specific ingredients. Also, if you’re looking for the perfect homemade gift idea, for any occasion, each issue provides DIY inspiration for creative packaging and the most unique gifts or spa bundle

Willow And Sage Magazine

The Willow And Sage Website is equally dreamy

The magazine is a quarterly magazine that starts in Feb. It’s an odd start date but when you look at lumping Jan into the winter issue, it makes sense. I totally understand doing the issues to follow the seasons, but it kills me to have to wait so long between publications! I usually go read it within the first two or three days, but definitely within the first week. It’s always interesting to see all the different ideas brought forth by other creators. I also enjoy the packaging ideas, bundle ideas, and ingredient spotlights. It’s a good way to learn about new benefits as well as help me with potential trend ideas. I have definitely used some of their ingredient spotlights to help focus on what ingredients to highlight to my customers.

So, if you’re looking for a beautiful magazine with a lot of fun diy ideas I would definitely give Willow & Sage a look. A quick side note is, many of the submitted recipes do not have preservatives in them therefore will not last for more than a few days or so.

Business Builders: Time Management

Business Builders: Time Management

When you run a small shop, it’s hard to find time to get everything done in the day. However, here are some tried and true tips to help you make the most of the time you DO have. Be as productive as possible instead of spinning your wheels.  Don’t fight your body clock. Don’t try to become and early riser if you have a history of being a night owl. And don’t stay up late to get stuff done if you know your mind and body shuts down early so that you can get up as the sun rises.

One of the greatest ironies of this age is that while various gadgets like smartphones and netbooks allow you to multitask, it seems that you never manage to get things done. You are caught in the busyness trap. There’s just too much work to do in one day that sometimes you end up exhausted with half-finished tasks.

The problem lies in how to keep our energy level high to ensure that you finish at least one of your most important tasks for the day. There’s just not enough hours in the day and it’s not possible to be productive the whole time.

The problem lies in how to keep our energy level high to ensure that you finish at least one of your most important tasks for the day. There’s just not enough hours in a day and it’s not possible to be productive the whole time.

Don’t fight your body clock. Don’t try to become and early riser if you have a history of being a night owl

You need more than time management. You need energy management

1. Dispel the idea that you need to be a “morning person” to be productive

How many times have you heard (or read) this advice – wake up early so that you can do all the tasks at hand. There’s nothing wrong with that advice. It’s actually reeks of good common sense – start early, finish early. The thing is that technique alone won’t work with everyone. Especially not with people who are not morning larks.

I should know because I was once deluded with the idea that I will be more productive if I get out of bed by 6 a.m. Like most of you Lifehackers, I’m always on the lookout for productivity hacks because I have a lot of things in my plate. I’m working full time as an editor for a news agency, while at the same time tending to my side business as a content marketing strategist. I’m also a travel blogger and oh yeah, I forgot, I also have a life.

I read a lot of productivity books and blogs looking for ways to make the most of my 24 hours. Most stories on productivity stress waking up early. So I did – and I was a major failure in that department – both in waking up early and finishing early.

2. Determine your “peak hours”

Energy management begins with looking for your most productive hours in a day. Getting attuned to your body clock won’t happen instantly but there’s a way around it.

Monitor your working habits for one week and list down the time when you managed to do the most work. Take note also of what you feel during those hours – do you feel energized or lethargic? Monitor this and you will find a pattern later on.

My experiment with being a morning lark proved that ignoring my body clock and just doing it by disciplining myself to wake up before 8 a.m. will push me to be more productive. I thought that by writing blog posts and other reports in the morning that I would be finished by noon and use my lunch break for a quick gym session. That never happened. I was sleepy, distracted and couldn’t write jack before 10 a.m.

In fact that was one experiment that I shouldn’t have tried because I should know better. After all, I’ve been writing for a living for the last 15 years, and I have observed time and again that I write more –and better – in the afternoon and in evenings after supper. I’m a night owl. I might as well, accept it and work around it.

Just recently, I was so fired up by a certain idea that – even if I’m back home tired from work – I took out my netbook, wrote and published a 600-word blog post by 11 p.m. This is a bit extreme and one of my rare outbursts of energy, but it works for me.

3. Block those high-energy hours

Once you have a sense of that high-energy time, you can then mold your schedule so that your other less important tasks will be scheduled either before or after this designated productive time.

Block them out in your calendar and use the high-energy hours for your high priority tasks – especially those that require more of your mental energy and focus. You also need to use these hours to any task that will bring you closer to you life’s goal.

If you are a morning person, you might want to schedule most business meetings before lunch time as it’s important to keep your mind sharp and focused. But nothing is set in stone. Sometimes you have to sacrifice those productive hours to attend to other personal stuff – like if you or your family members are sick or if you have to attend your son’s graduation.

That said, just remember to keep those productive times on your calendar. You may allow for some exemptions but stick to that schedule as much as possible. It may be helpful to journal your energy level for a few days until you figure out when you find yourself the most productive.

There’s no right or wrong way of using this energy management technique because everything depends on your own personal circumstances. What you need to remember is that you have to accept what works for you – and not what other productivity gurus say you should do.

Understanding your own body clock is the key to time management. Without it, you end up exhausted chasing a never-ending cycle of tasks and frustrations.

“If  a girl says not to get her a birthday present that means get me a birthday present and make sure it’s jewelry.” ― Kami Garcia, Beautiful Creatures

I don’t know about you, but there are a certain few people that I need gifts for throughout the year for Christmas or birthdays, and don’t forget Mother’s day, yet I was continually struggling with finding the perfect gift.

I try to support indy, small shops at every moment I can, because handmade and supporting family-owned business is important to me. So I felt right at home on Gypsy Spoonful. I also think it’s awesome that shipping is never extra on GypsySpoonful. It’s always included in the price so there are no yucky “surprises” with exorbitant shipping fees at checkout.

While I was bopping around on the site, checking out shops, I stumbled upon Noveenna . She creates breathtaking, handmade JEWELRY and she’s our featured  Gypsy Spoonful shop of the month

Sometimes you just see a piece of jewelry and think of a person instantly, I sure did this when I came across her shop. I have a wishlist made on Gypsy Spoonful and I’ve been adding a bunch of her pieces to it. (Make a Wishlist on GypsySpoonful too.) What I REALLY like about her jewelry is not only does it look incredibly well-made and awesome quality, but that there are matching pieces in a collection. I can buy a beadwoven collar for Christmas for my aunt, and buy a coordinating cuff bracelet when Mother’s day arrives.

Noveenna

I have a hard time mixing and matching jewelry and I like to wear earrings, necklaces and bracelets (all 3) when I go out or get dressed up. This takes the confusion out of it for me. With coordinating pieces, it’s a breeze to accessorize an outfit without worrying that the earrings might not go with the necklace. Check out her mambo mauve collection by clicking HERE. , It’s so hard to pick just one favorite collection, I also have a soft spot in my heart for her Starlight Memories collection, so vibrant and cheery!

Noveenna

Another awesome thing about her designs, is that her jewelry is the type that you can wear to a variety of outings, or for everyday wear. Some are more statement pieces, and some are more casual. All of them are very versatile and not too over the top. They’re subtle and demure, and her color combinations are way cool.  Many times when I find a style or type of design I like, I like to have a few pieces in this same style, that’s perfect for shopping Noveenna’s shop. If you like the beadwoven collar style necklaces, there are several pieces , each in a diferent color combo that she names.  I suggest, the next time you need a gift, or want to treat yourself, you check out Noveenna’s shop on GypsySpoonful.

Trending

This blog post is a compilation of fresh trends our blog team is noticing across Gypsy Spoonful and the handmade industry as a whole: what makers are creating, what shoppers are loving, and what’s hot right now in the wider market. These trend predictions for 2018 are based, in part, on past top searches across categories on GypsySpoonful.com

What is STILL going strong, carried over from 2018?

In 2018 we continued to see a moderate uptick in the popularity of Unicorns and Mermaids as well as Donuts and Foxes.  It was a year filled with magical motifspastels, and all things Beachy. Gypsy Spoonful shoppers took to these trends and seem to still be holding onto most of them. Cacti and Succulents made a big impact and that does not seem to be deminishing

As we march on into 2019,  some have predicted that the trends will move away from idealist distractions, and shift towards reality. This year we’re actively embracing our own, individual realities, whatever they happen to be – from living life to the max, or celebrating a lazy, day on the couch. Shoppers are about to “get real” – so we are officially declaring 2019 the year of Being Real, which includes using all-natural products, focusing on sustainability, and being realistic when it comes to decorating and living.

Sh*t Just Got Real

The world isn’t perfect (and you don’t have to pretend that is), but you can also do something about it. – See Craftivism

Pantone’s color of the year: Living Coral

While millennial pink and ultraviolet are still having their respective moments, We’re excited to see this cheerful tone take over our homes, outfits and accessories. This floral-inspired hue is whistful (yet grounding) and unapologetically natural – exactly what we need in 2019.

https://www.pantone.com/color-intelligence/color-of-the-year/color-of-the-year-2019

Living Coral accented items on Gypsy Spoonful are plentiful and you can expect to see a great deal more in 2019. It’s so visually appealing, dontcha think? See all items tagged “Coral”here.

Chaos and Mayhem…

haha, not really.. but whatever the polar opposite of minimalism is… Yes, kids this is the moment you’ve secretly been waiting for! It’s an all-out  rebellion against the often unrealistic quest for order and perfection in our homes and lives. What was once considered clutter is now on-trend – clashing patterns, styles, prints and colors are all permissible, as there’s no limit to this eclectic trend. We predict, in 2019 you will begin to see mashups of prints and patterns coming from the small shops of Gypsy Spoonful. Embrace it, it is futile to resist!

What else do we see as growing in trendiness?

Transparency is something we strongly believe in at Gypsy Spoonful~ everyone in the community is a vital part of the team where all insights, thoughts, comments and beliefs are considered before any official decisions are made.

Truth be told, in 2018 we had over 50 members that were cut due to inactivity, or fdidn’t work out for one reason or another, or failure to contribute to the community advertising kitty…

Gypsy Spoonful is not for everyone, but it’s for the right people. Those with hustle, those who want to grow their businesses, and can catch the vision of where we want to be . Those who can envision a completely handmade marketplace where it is 100% American Handmade Products, Where community triumphs over competition and people are valued over profits. I did not build Gypsy Spoonful to be mediocre, I don’t work over 80 hours a week to be average.
I have never believed in something more.

Do you want to surround yourself with people who dream bigger than you do? Do you want to believe in something larger and more profound than what you’re currently doing with your small shop? You DON’T have to do it alone, there are people who will come around you, and teach you, mentor you, support you, but you HAVE to give back… you HAVE to give equal effort. I’m not going to lie , it’s hard work, but the results and the satisfaction in the end is so worthwhile and rewarding… not to mention the feeling you get when you see another Gypsy succeed and their business start to take off…

THAT is why I am doing what I’m doing…

Not everyone gets in, Not everyone stays in… but the right people do… and I make no apologies for having high expectations for our members, I set the bar high, not gonna lie, but I don’t ask anything of our members that I don’t give myself.

Next: go here, read what we believe, we’ve laid everything out very transparently for everyone to see…
Choose a membership, and then fill out the application, and we’ll be in touch. We’re adding some new shops in 2019…

Here’s some beer facts to help your celebration get off to a GREAT start:

  • At any given time, 0.7% of the world is drunk. So 50 million people are drunk right now.
  • Cenosillicaphobia is the fear of an empty beer glass.
  • The world’s longest hangover lasted 4 weeks after a Scotsman consumed 60 pints of beer.

The strongest beer in the world has a 67.5% alcohol content!! (Snake Venom by Brewmeister in the UK)

Snake Venom Beer : Strongest Beer In The World
We, here at GS want to help you enjoy your beer experience to the fullest potential.
More Beer Facts:
  • Slugs like beer -weird but TRUE! If you take a small container like a tuna tin, fill it withbeer, and set it on the ground. The slugs will be attracted to the beer, go for a sip, fall in and drown. Don’t submerge the top of the tin even with the soil level or you might also kill ground beetles which eatslugs. Keep rims at least 1″ above soil level.
  • Amsterdam pays alcoholics in beer to clean streets: 5 cans of beer for a day’s work, plus €10 and tobacco.
  • Beer was not considered an alcoholic beverage in Russia until 2013!  It is not restricted to certain stores and is sold around the clock.
National Beer Lover's Day : Do you think he drinks a commie red ale?

Commie Red Ale?

  • The Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew temple in Thailand was constructed with 1 million bottles of Heineken and a local beer.
  • The first modern American IPA was Anchor Liberty Ale: a single-hopped, dry-hopped West Coast IPA before there was such a thing as West Coast IPAs (remember, this was first released in 1975), Anchor’s Liberty Ale still features Cascade hops. Perhaps the only way the beer’s changed in the last 40+ years is that it’s currently available in cans. And obviously the high watermark in the existence of Liberty Ale is that it was selected as one of America’s 25 essential IPAs.
  • There’s a beer brewed from bananas in Africa

Be Consistent

Consistency is the Money Maker in Small Business

Running a business is a marathon, not a sprint. Nothing is truer than this in small business. It doesn’t matter if you sell handmade products, direct sales products or pizzas at the corner store. You can’t just open the doors, put up a sign and expect the people to pour in to buy your goodies.

You have to market your business. You run ads, offer sales and coupons, restock and reevaluate inventory and share on social media. Anything to keep putting yourself in front of people that will eventually lead to sales, hopefully. If your business is not seen, you don’t have a business and you are not going to succeed and grow.

How you choose to “grow and show” your business depends on the type of business it is and where and how your target market will most likely find you. Your personality is also a factor in your marketing efforts. For example, going live on Facebook is an excellent tool to build relationships with your potential customers. You can answer questions, share your product and interact with people in real time. But, if you are like me and you can’t stand the thought of being on camera and can barely stutter your way through it, this is probably not going to be a technique you use much.

Marketing has a rule called the Rule of 7. It states that a prospect needs to be exposed to your message at least 7 times before they will actually take action. In today’s digital age, I would venture that this number may be increasing. The reality is that it is more difficult now to get your message seen in the overwhelming amount of information available now to the everyday consumer.  You need to leave an impact and you need to show up.

Regardless of how you promote your business, the one thing that I and most other small business owners have found, is that to put and keep your business marketing efforts on the right track, you have to be consistent. Now, that does not mean that you need to be doing it constantly. Just consistently. Regularly. If people are used to seeing you post weekly, post weekly. If you can do daily, even better. Here is what does not work. Binge marketing for 3 hours one day and then doing nothing for the next 3 days. It may seem like you are getting tons of work done but a very limited number of people are going to actually see all that effort.

I have to admit, consistency is my biggest downfall and what I have to work the hardest at myself. A couple of years ago, I thought I had found the perfect answer to staying consistent on my social media when I found one of the scheduling platforms that have started to pop up everywhere. While they are definitely helpful, I found that they are not the perfect solution for me either. First, you still have to set up all the posts. You are still spending the time to craft the text and find the perfect image. Second, you still need to spend time tweaking your posts for the various social media and monitor the posts for engagement. Bottom line to me is yes they are an excellent way to cover certain times but you also need to continue to post in real time so that you stay current, trending and let your personality shine through.
